Article Title:  .eu proves popular

On 7 April 2006 .eu was publicly launched. Since this date, businesses and individuals who are based within the EU have been able to register .eu domain names. It has proved to be a popular new top level domain.

In just over a month, EURid (the registry responsible for .eu) has received over 1.7 million applications for .eu names. These names have been activated. However, this figure does not include the applications for over 245,000 .eu names which were filed by brand owners during the Sunrise Period and which are still progressing through the validation process.

The most number of applications for .eu names have been received from Germany followed by the UK, the Netherlands and then Italy. With such a response to the launch, .eu is now the 4th largest top level domain in Europe after .de (Germany), .uk (United Kingdom) and .nl (the Netherlands) and the 8th largest registry in the world.

As it appears that .eu has proved to be popular, businesses which operate in Europe should ensure that they have registered .eu names which correspond to their brand names, even as part of a defensive registration
strategy.
