Article Title:  Security breaches and W3C

Security breach legislation was headline news again recently with a debate on the topic at the W3C topic in Edinburgh at which Eversheds' Jonathan Armstrong spoke about the possibility of further Federal legislation in the US.

The W3C conference came to the UK for the first time with around 1,500 delegates gathered in Edinburgh. W3C is 'the body who invented the internet' and speakers at this year's event included Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Jack McConnell. An extensive programme of internet security sessions looked at a number of initiatives to increase public confidence in online trade and some of the many issues involved.

Developments in the US House of Representatives towards a Federal data breach reporting bill have been prompted by another high profile security breach this time compromising the personal details of more than 26 million American military veterans. Incredibly, it has been said that this breach alone may cost $500 million to clean up. The new bill would establish strict standards for commercial companies to follow in the event of a data breach - including notifying customers "as quickly as possible," posting an alert on their websites and picking up the cost of credit reports for one year.
