One of the most common questions that we get asked here at Eventure is “How much should my business spend on on PPC?” We would like to say that there is a definitive answer, but that would be far too easy! There are a few ways of cutting the cloth when it comes to billing for PPC work, so as guide for those who are struggling here is a list of common pricing methods and the pros and cons to each approach.

Percentage of Spend

You typically will pay the agency a fixed percentage of whatever it is your spending on adverts. Often this is around 10% – so if you’re spending £10,000 a month, you’re being billed £1,000 on top.

Pros – Your bill reflects the size of the account.

Cons – There is an incentive to increase your spend, regardless of the merits.

Percentage of Sales

Like the percentage of spend, you pay based on the percentage of revenue driven by your adverts.

Pros – You are only paying for adverts that are directly generating sales.

Cons – Attributing sales accurately to first click is between difficult and impossible and you’re likely to overlook important top of the funnel opportunities.

Baseline

The agency runs the campaign without any changes being made for a period of time. From thereon in, they take a cut depending upon an agreed improvement in specific metrics, typically Cost Per Click.

Pros – It’s sounds great so you feel good when you sign the contract.

Cons – The agency tends to concentrate on specific metrics, rather than performance and your business. If they make just a small improvement in month one, they don’t then have to do anything else whilst still they get paid.

Fixed Fee

You pay X amount a month and the agency runs you’re PPC activity. Usually the bigger the size of the account (either in spend or in keywords) the more you pay.

Pros – It’s a fixed fee which is good for planning and the agency is able to concentrate on doing the best they can without perverse billing incentives.

Cons – It’s difficult to understand just what is being done – an agency can easily do nothing month to month and still get paid.

Hourly Rate

You pay based on how much time has been spent managing your account. Usually that means the bigger the account, the more work is needed (and thus billing is higher).

Pros – You only spend money when work is being done. And like a fixed fee, there are no perversion of incentive for doing a good job.

Cons – There are no guarantees that the work being done is helping. Doing work for the sake of it won’t help you to sell more but will create costs.

When your business is small, or your site is new, you probably don’t need or can’t afford a dedicated developer. But getting to that stage is essential for serious ecommerce. At Eventure we either offer fully standalone dedicated projects or semi-dedicated through our marketing plus program. When it comes to the marketing of a site, there are serious advantages that make it so worthwhile it pays for itself in the long term.

UX Testing

Would more people convert if that buy now button was on the left or on the right? Is green really the best colour for all my links to be or should they be red?
With UX testing, you don’t have to guess these things. You can get the best UX experience which in the end has a lot of advantages.

Better conversion rates, better sites more people coming back and more people sharing, more people signing up, the benefits are endless.

Automated Marketing

What’s better than great marketing? Great marketing that runs fully automatically!

Email automation – Names are added automatically reducing admin costs. Messages can be sent automatically without someone having to create them each time. Better targeted messages leading to more conversions.

Social automation – We can set up for social updates to automatically go live once you have sent out an email. As well as this we can create a social schedule where we can set up your social updates to go live automatically.

Content Marketing

Content marketing is about great ideas being shown in really great ways. No matter how great the writing, if you display it on page with little or no navigational interest, it’ll bomb,

We’re visual people so great content needs a good home to sit on.

Faster Websites

Websites require maintenance. Databases get full of junk which cause them to eventually slow down. With constant tuning from a developer, they purr like a sports car.

Better Management

Your business is all about you. Well not quite, but it could be. If you’ve got the right info at your fingertips, you can make better decisions. You can also open up new opportunities for expanding your business if you have someone taking the slack off you’re shoulders.

More Focus & Less Cost

Like a bulk buy at the supermarket, buy more get more free. One off changes cost more. But forget about cost, the fact you have the same developer working all the time on your website means they know their way around it far better. They’ll diagnose problems quicker and have way better ideas on how to improve it, making your website run smoothly.

We bring ideas to life, if you are looking for new options to grow your business then a dedicated developer may be the option. At Eventure we can help support your ideas so if you have a question then feel free to get in contact.

When undertaking an ecommerce project with your Ecommerce Website Design company you need to take some time to write the static content that will appear on it. This is standard information that should be on every ecommerce website. Below is a guide of the kind of information you should include:

Terms and Conditions
This is one of the essential pages on your website, stating the terms and conditions of the website and sale, most customers tick these as they go through checkout so it’s a good idea to make sure all your bases are covered. You should try to cover the following things:
General
This sets out the terms you will use in the terms and conditions and who they refer to and what the terms and conditions apply to. It will also state that the terms and conditions will not affect your customers statutory rights
Prices
This section will detail the currency the product will be sold in and detail that there may be need to alter the pricing on the website and occasionally prices may be incorrect.
Payment Options
A list of the Payment types accepted on the website and the payment provider used should be detailed here
Order Process
This section will detail the process the customer will go through to place an order and should stress the importance of a customer’s rectifying any errors before placing an order and what happens if the bank declines their card.
Order Confirmation
This part will tell the customer that they will receive confirmation of the order by email, that they should check it for errors.
Cancellation of Orders
This section should detail how a customer can cancel their order and their rights.
VAT & Duty
This section should detail that you charge VAT on items and how this works, but as this rate can change frequently you may choose not to actually display the current rate, to avoid having to update your terms frequently.
Content
In this section you may wish to state ownership of the content on the website and state any reproduction should be for personal use only.
Force Majeure
This section should state you are not responsible for delays that are outside your control.

Returns and Delivery Policy
Although these policies can be included in terms and conditions it is sometimes useful for customers to see a separate page clearly stating the delivery and returns.
In your returns policy, you should detail whether customers are eligible to return items under the distance selling regulations and the length of time they have to return an item and the method they should use and a returns address. You should also explain the process for the return of faulty goods.
For the delivery policy you should detail delivery times, costs and any surcharges that may be applied. It should also state who is responsible for the cost of products that get lost in the post. It is useful to the customer to also the list the countries you deliver to and the costs for delivery, so customers can check prior to placing an order

Privacy Policy
The privacy policy should detail how you intend to use customer’s data after it is provided; it is standard to say that it will only be used for legitimate business practices and will not be passed onto third parties. You should also state that you comply with the Data protection act and comply with it. You should therefore give customers the chance to see the details that you hold on them by written request. You may also wish to mention the cookies you store in addition to data on your website.

Security
This is not an essential page but can be very useful to reassure customers that they are dealing with a legitimate company. This page should detail how your payment provider deals securely with payment card information, mentioning the type of encryption used and how credit card details are stored. You can get the information needed from your payment provider and customers will feel more confident knowing their payment details are being handled securely.

Contact Us
This page usually has a contact form or email address put on by your development company, it is usually where a customer comes for information, so it is also useful to display your address and phone number here. You can also display your company details that should be on your website like your VAT number and your Companies House number.

About Us
You should have written some content for your homepage about your company, the about us page is an extension of this content and allows you to go into more detail about the history of your company and provide some background information. This page is also good for reassuring customers you are a legitimate business.

It is a good idea to think about this information and put it together before your web project has started as it will help you formulate how you want to get your business and website to run. Your web designer will usually put these pages on for you as they tend to change fairly infrequently and will need them when they are building the pages. You wouldn’t want to hold up your site launching for the sake of some text so it’s worth getting it written early and sent to your web design company as soon as possible. We also advise that your terms and conditions are checked by a legal professional in case there are any disputes with a customer.
