When it comes to PPC advertising, many businesses owners immediately gravitate towards Google Ads without considering their other options, like Bind Ads.

After all, Google rules the internet, right?

Although Google unarguably retains the majority of the search market, Bing advertising shouldn’t be wiped off the radar. Instead of narrowing your options to just one PPC platform, let’s walk through why you should consider expanding your PPC efforts to Bing.

Bing Ads Vs. Google Ads – What’s The Difference?

If we dig below the clever algorithms, we can see that at their foundations, both Bing & Google are designed from the same concept.

That being, both platforms operate on a pay-per-click basis, to help businesses reach their target audience, drive traffic, and most importantly increase revenue.

Despite possessing a similar DNA, both platforms contain unique features and benefits that are advantageous over the other.

Bing Ads – The Benefits That You Should Be Considering

Google may seem like the holy grail when it comes to PPC advertising, however, Bing has some pretty attractive benefits that you should really be considering before you launch your next PPC campaign.

Here are just a few benefits that you can expect with Bing Ads:

Less Competition = Cheaper CPC’s

When it comes down to the search engine market, it’s common knowledge that Google holds the monopoly. However, despite Google having a larger search volume and reach than it’s competitor search engines, it certainly doesn’t mean that competitors such as Bing aren’t worth considering when it comes to advertising.

Let’s crunch some numbers:

Bing currently has 34% of the desktop search engine market share worldwide

There are approximately 5.4 billion monthly searches conducted on the Bing Network

135 million unique searchers

Bing Ads reach 63 million searchers that aren’t reached on Google AdWords.

Although Bing may be lacking in the search volume front, it certainly makes up the ground on cost.

With less volume, comes fewer competitors, and when there are fewer competitors present it means that advertisers can take advantage of the cheaper cost-per-clicks.

In some instances, advertisers can expect to save up to 50% when using Bing for PPC.

Improved Granular Control

If you are pretty familiar with Google Ads, you will know that you can set a network, location, language, ad scheduling and ad rotation settings at the campaign level. However, ad groups remain limited to their campaign-level setting.

Unlike AdWords, Bing allows advertisers to make adjustments at the ad group level as well. This makes it much simpler to manage a sophisticated ad scheduling strategy.

More Search Engines

Expanding your reach has never been easier. Although Bing has less overall traffic than Google, it is comprised of 3 individual search engines – Bing, Yahoo and AOL.

So, when you advertise on the Bing platform, your advertisement is in fact seen across all three platforms, unlike Google, which only has 1 search engine.

This instantly connects you with millions of search and therefore expanding your overall search.

Easy Set-Up

If you’re looking to trail some Bing advertising for the first time, it couldn’t be more straightforward. Bing offers advertisers the ability to import their existing AdWords campaigns from Google.

This means that you need not waste hours recreating your successful campaigns from Google!

Give It A Go!

Bing Ads may not be taking the spotlight away from Google anytime soon, but that definitely doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth giving a shot.

Permitting that your advertising budget allows for it, leveraging both platforms is certainly a recipe for success!

1. Be Specific

– It is true that short generic keywords will get your ad’s seen more, but not necessarily by people looking for your products. Generic search terms make it more likely people will click through the ad mistakenly looking for another brand or without reading the ad fully, this will impact your bounce rate and conversion rates. Being more specific or using long tail keywords will help people find you who are specifically looking for your business and products.

2. Think Like Your Audience

– Consider what terms or phrases would people who want your products be searching for? It’s a great idea to use your own branding terms as these are likely to be less competitive and the people who are searching these are definitely going to be looking for your company/products.

3. Use The Tools Available

– Utilize tools like Adwords Planner or Keyword Everywhere to get ideas for keywords and to see what’s going to work the best for you. These tools will help you figure out the balance of how competitive a keyword is vs how many searches it gets. Ranking for a highly competitive keyword is difficult and usually very expensive, but often bidding on less competitive terms will mean lower search rates.

4. Scope Out the Competition

– Look into what your main competitors are ranking for or targeting. This can not only expand your list of potential keywords, as there may be some you’re overlooking. But most importantly it’ll show you what’s working in the industry at the moment.

5. Understand Match type

– Use the match type keywords to your advantage.
• Broad Match – these will give your ads the most impressions as it will include any word in your phrase, misspelt terms or synonyms of your keywords
• Phrase Match – your ad will show for any search that includes your phrase anywhere in the search
• Exact Match – This will show your Ad only when your exact keyword is used or a very close variant.
• Broad Match Modified – this will show your ad for searches that include all of the phrase but in any order.

If you’re a merchant and you sell online then you need to be aware that there are big upcoming changes to the way Google displays you’re products in their search results. Whether for better or worse, it’s happening – get ready and hold on tight…

The History

When Google started its shopping search engine, it was called Froogle: A name which many in the industry still use – old habits die hard and all that. It’s changed a lot over the years but the premise has been simple – Merchants products were displayed in the SERPs (Search results) to help users find the products they want and navigate to the websites where they could buy them. Google created these listings using their normal crawls or even better, by using the product feeds submitted through Google Merchant Centre. Most importantly of all though, it was all for free!

So What’s Changing

First off, it’s now referred to as Google Shopping (and has been for a while in the UK) But the most important change is that these free listings are being discontinued. Merchants that don’t pay for it, won’t have their products listed. Simple.

Also, (and this is the bit we’re excited about) advertisers are going to be able to provide data feeds or product listings through Google AdWords. For those that are on the ball, it’s more or less how Product Listings currently work. However, Merchants won’t bid on particular keywords but rather bid how much they’re willing to pay, if their listings appears and get clicks or produce sales. Getting to the top will depend on a combination of perceived relevance and bid price – basically Adwords on steroids.

Google also says the new Google Shopping listings will be able to show if merchants have any special deals or offers — these can also be sent within the merchant’s data feed. If that doesn’t get you excited, you don’t get to join our nerd club…

Why Is It Changing

Google say, the quality of data in Google shopping is generally low, and that makes life more difficult for their users. Shifting to the new model is a simple way of stripping out the junk information and spammy listings. It’s also aiming to give savvy e-commerce marketers a hell of a lot more control in getting products displayed.

However, any half-awake cynic would suggest it’s about money. Like with most successful web based giants, we all get hooked onto a free service before we’re forced to pay for it. Usually it’s a bit more subtle as to how we remunerate for the service (eg we give Facebook our personal data and Instagram our images) but in this instance, its cold hard cash that’s the currency. For many, it’s not really practical now to go cold turkey.

What You Need To Do

There is always the option to walk away of course and stand up to these awful corporate giants and not give them a penny: And good for you – fight the system! But the reality is, Google Shopping still represents an important sales channel and serious merchants need to get themselves in order.

Note: If you are already on the Eventure Marketing Program and using adwords, you’re in the clear! Sit back and enjoy the show. We will manage your budgets accordingly and suggest increases in ad spend as applicable.

To keep your products showing, you will need to do two things. Create a well formatted product feed or listing and create an Adwords account as well as preparing yourself for an additional outgoing. If you want to read more about it then have a look at the adwords blog post ‘Google Shopping Goes Global‘, it’ll give you all you need to know.

I Can’t Do That, We Hear You Cry!

If you aren’t technically minded or your are prepared to let someone else do all the heavy lifting, you should contact your closest friendly e-commerce specialists who will need to be able handle both feed creation and Adwords account management. This is most easily done by ringing the number at the top of this page or filling out the form at the bottom of this page.

Whatever you choose to do, you need to act now. Changes are being gradually rolled and by June, the old system will have disappeared for good.

Questions or comments are open below if you need to know more or want to share your thoughts…

With the evolvement of web 2.0 social media has become increasingly popular to the point where 62% of the world’s 2billion internet users are using it frequently. Gone is the time where setting up a social profile for your business is optional, it’s now required for two reasons:

Marketing; Social media helps entice customers to your website. It can also harness the passion of your customers which will help drive purchases and buzz.

Support/ Customer Service; Social media engages customers directly and deals with any issues in a straightforward and quick manner. This helps drive down the cost of service and will help build a better experience for all of your customers.

Google+ already has over 250 million users proving its latest foray into the world of social networking is here for the long haul. It has some key advantages for businesses over its rivals such as Facebook and Twitter who provide a platform to promote content and interact with customers but not much else. Google+, however is a fully integrated search and social profile that will become central to Google’s future identity and how we find and share information. It has already begun this transition with the integrations of its services such as Gmail, Reader and YouTube.

So how does Google+ help you?

Integration into Search:

Google+ members can search against both the broader web and their own Google+ social graph. This means circles, business pages, posts and pictures will be integrated into the search engine. Members will be able to search information from their network of associates that is private and only shared with them as well as information publically available on the internet.

The popular Google Places profile for businesses has also been integrated into the brand. Now called Google+ local it allows for a simple way to discover and share local information about businesses including a 30-point rating system and recommendations. This is fully integrated into Google search and Maps allowing for all your profiles to be merged and managed on a single page.

The ‘+1’ button:

Google’s share button, the +1 can be embedded on your website and acts as a public recommendation by appearing in search results .They are tied to specific landing pages similar to tweets or likes and are tallied separately for each page. When +1ing a webpage you get the opportunity to share your +1 with your Google+ circles .Interestingly, they affect each page’s Quality Score, which could help you PPC campaigns.

The +1 button also has some SEO impact too. Content recommended by friends and acquaintances is often more relevant that content from strangers. For Instance, a film review from an expert may be useful, but a review from a friend who shares your tastes could be even better. Due to this, +1’s are a useful signal to Google when determining the relevance of your page to a user query.

Additional Functionality:

Even after its rapid growth, Google+ is still significantly smaller than other social networks and a much lower percentage of businesses have a presence there. Subsequently, early uptake can be a distinct competitive advantage as you have the opportunity for a much larger market penetration.

It also had the advantage of monitoring its competitors to see what features work and what did not. This means Google+ is more of a hybrid incorporating functions that worked in Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin and building on them with its own distinct range of functionalities that sets it apart. It has perfected the use of circles to share data with different groups of peoples as well as integrating elements of Skype with Hangouts, Zagat with reviews and ratings with Quora which has the ability to share questions and answers.

Google+ is more than a social network; it’s a social extension of Google’s search engine. If your business wants to develop both search and social strategies, Google+ is becoming a vital tool that should be seriously considered by all businesses.

Text too small, menu not clear enough…what is your pet hate with websites? We’ve all got something that we really dislike and it would seem Google are no different.

In (another) Google algorithm update released today we see that Google are targeting websites that have too many adverts in the instantly visible area of the page, otherwise known as ‘above the fold’.

This change has been given the catchy title ‘page layout algorithm’ and it is locking on to sites that deliberately bury their content under piles of adverts almost as big as the one residents of Brierley Hill are dwarfed by.

Click Less – Find More

This change is all about enhancing the user experience, Google want users to be able to find what they are looking for in as few clicks as possible. They aren’t saying that websites have to reduce the number of adverts displayed on the page only that the content needs to be near the top of the page so that visitors to the site do not have to scroll down to locate it.

It was also confirmed, by Google, that sites that use pop-ups and overlays will not be impacted by this change.

Are You Guilty?

So how do you know if your site is going to be one of those penalised? Affiliate sites owners should definitely sit up and take notice.

Unlike other changes no tools are being provided by Google to enable site owners to instantly determine if there site falls foul of the new changes. Instead they have suggested that people use the Google Browser Size tool or similar to determine just how much of a page’s content is visible at first glance, it obviously takes into consideration various screen resolutions.

What the tool won’t tell you are the all important factors how far down is too far and how many ads are too many? Google, kind people that they are, have decided to leave that to site owners to decide….give them enough rope eh!

Guilty – Send Them Down

Google have stated that the change will impact less than 1% of global searches on Google but what happens if you are affected and rankings begin to drop?

If you do start to see a drop in rank from today, it is likely to be the whole site that is penalised and not just the page that is ad heavy. Don’t panic just get the changes made and wait for Google to revisit the site. It will have been tagged as ad heavy initially and, unfortunately, it could be several weeks before the changes are noted by Google and normal service is resumed.

For more information read the official page layout algorithm update post in full.

One final thought regarding this change is how Google will apply this new benchmark to their own pages or if it will even apply at all? Its funny that you can’t test their pages with the Google Browser Size tool to see just how their pages fair…..go on, try it you know you want to!

Everyone knows about the growth of social media in your personal life, if you are on Facebook or twitter you can keep up to date with what is going on friends and families lives by just checking status updates. You can follow the personal lives of celebrities or sports personalities on twitter and join groups and find like-minded people on Facebook. Google+ now allows you to divide up friends and family using circles and just update to one area

With the growth of social media over the past few years, it’s hardly surprising that businesses are questioning how they can apply the use of social marketing to their business. The applications themselves have responded to this demand by producing areas of the sites particularly for businesses and brands.

Facebook now has a particularly strong business presence. As a start you can produce a page about your business. The Facebook business page allows you to post pictures, information about your business and allows you to have a wall to interact with your customers. Businesses can take advantage of this outlet by producing offers especially for Facebook users, allowing customers to contact them with customer support issues and generally interacting with customers in a way that isn’t possible on most websites. This use of Facebook allows customers to see the organisation as approachable and can create trust in the brand or company. A company with regular postings and offers and a link from their website will soon grow their likes. Formally it was a quest to grow fans but as the like button has gained popularity the key now is to get users to like your page.

After adding a page to Facebook there are other avenues you can explore on Facebook to promote traffic to your site. Facebook has its own version of Facebook Ads that appear when you are logged into Facebook. Facebook ads are demographically targeted so if you’ve just announced you are engaged, adverts will appear advertising wedding information, same if you have an interest in fashion listed ads will be targeted to your interests. As users enter their date of birth and where they live ads can also be targeted on age and location. Adding Facebook ads to your site can help build a community around your website started by your Facebook page. The reach of Facebook ads isn’t yet as great as google adwords but it’s definitely worth trying. You can start by setting a small daily budget and just trialling a few ads; you can choose to pay per impression or per click.

Pages and ads now have Facebook insights, a form of analytics so you can check how well your Facebook campaign is progressing.

While Twitter doesn’t have the business applications specifically built for it like Facebook, any business can set up a twitter page. Then link to it from your website, it can be a quick way of keeping customers up to date with offers and new items on your website as well as a useful communication tool as it’s easy to check twitter and update twitter from most mobiles as its accessible using sms.

Another less direct method of using social media is putting links to it on your website. All major social networks have a way of sharing your content with others on your network of choice.

By adding the Facebook like button to your website, including products, users can share with other the products on your website or just the fact they have found your website, if they are already are logged into Facebook, it’s a simple click and your website has been shared with that users friends. Twitter have a useful button of tweet this to allow users to share what they are looking at with followers and the newest member of the social media family Google, have the plus one button to allow content to be shared with other members on Google+.

However you want to market your website, we recommend you consider social media as an aspect of your online marketing.

One of the best ways to maximize the amount of internet traffic to a business website is to invest in search ads. Search ads are search engine results that are paid for placement on the search engine results page. Companies invest in paid search engine ads either when they are unable to rank for a desired search term organically or when they want their website to be listed for multiple listings on the search engine results page, occupying both the paid and organic spots.

Paid search engine placement can be a very worthy investment for many companies. For example, if a local plumbing company is unable to rank for the term “plumbers” organically, they may take advantage of paid advertising target features. When plumbing is searched, the local plumbing company will appear on the search engine results page for searchers in their area keying in the term, “plumber”. Although the ads cost money and there will be competitors, these ads are highlighted above the organic search results on the search engine page. Hence, there is a high likelihood that a business with a paid ad space will be clicked on by a potential consumer over non-paid sites. Many studies have proven this to be true.

Google recently conducted a study where they froze search ad accounts for several companies over a short span of time. Over 400 ads were chosen, which meant that an individual would not see those ads at all on the search engine page. A business’ website would still be available, but only as an organic result. Google then saw if consumers organically clicked on a business’ website from a search result. The study showed that the business website dropped in organic clicks compared to what the same business had when it had a paid ad. Quantitatively, Google showed that the search ads drove in 89% of the traffic to the website.

This demonstrates that even when a page is naturally ranked on the Google search engine results page, it can still be worthwhile to invest in paid placement, as the total volume of visitors does go down when only organic listing are available.

Just recently there have been numerous changes from Google. As well as the launch of the highly anticipated Google+, one of the main changes is Google Places. Due to a high number of complaints from third party sites such as Yelp and Trip Advisor, Google has now removed all reviews generated by these third party companies as they were unhappy with Google using their reviews without permission.

Before Google made the changes various reviews from other third party websites were automatically added to various listings in Google Places. In most of these cases these websites had not given Google the permission to use such content. After many complaints Google finally made the decision to remove all reviews taken from other websites. Also as part of this recent change, Google is instead including links to these reviews available on third party websites, and all reviews left by its users on Google Places will remain.

One of the other changes announced is that a new “write a review” button is included on all entries in Google Places. This new feature along with existing reviews left by other users is designed to help Google Places provide personalised recommendations to other businesses based on reviews left by you and your friends. This new feature invites its users’ to recommend local businesses they like and those they didn’t.

These reviews definitely can either help or hinder local businesses. Having a number of positive reviews will encourage other customers to come visit that particular business while negative reviews will encourage customers to avoid them. These reviews can have a very serious impact on any business either way. This will determine a company’s reputation which can either be good or bad.

It is very important to keep an eye on these reviews to see if there is a positive or negative trend. When a customer leaves a positive review, always make sure to thank them for that. If they leave a negative review you may want to apologize to them for the negative experience. It will also be vital to work with them and focus on managing your businesses reputation and engage with your customers to avoid any more negative feedback.

Not a social ‘know all’? It doesn’t matter as surely you’ve heard about the Google +1 Button but what is it really all about and what does it mean for social marketing?

Designed to bring more relevant information to users the +1 button is Google’s answer to the Facebook ‘Like’ button.

By clicking the +1 button on a site, blog, article, organic or sponsored listing this will convey to all of that users Google network connections that they recommend the site by displaying ‘Jack +1’d this’.

These social marketing personal recommendations are a way to drive more qualified traffic to websites.

Now completely rolled out the Google +1 button can be added to all aspects of a website, will be displayed automatically on Google AdWords adverts and can be closely monitored in Webmaster Tools to see just what effect it is having on business.

A recent study examining how prevalent social plug-ins, such as the Facebook Like Button and Boxes or Tweet buttons, are on home pages of the top 10,000 ranking sites has found that there Google +1 button has seen an increased presence of more than 28% in the last month alone. Current figures mean that it is now one more homepages than the Tweet button.

And for the future…

Google’s latest offering to the social networking world Google+ is currently in ‘project’ mode and only accessible by invitation. It has been receiving mixed reviews from those lucky enough to have access to the new network but the majority have been very positive and the industry feeling is that this is actually a breath of fresh air.

The concept behind the Google+ network is to make sharing simpler between family and friends. Will it work for businesses and brands? The initial feelings are that it will be a slow burn for businesses as there is currently no active ‘fan’ or ‘follower’ equivalent included in the design.

However, Google have confirmed that there will be a business element added to the service further down the line and this will see the introduction of pages for businesses and, by making updates public there is an assumption that they will eventually be indexed by Google.

Eventure Internet understand how important social marketing is to the success of a website and incorporate all social marketing aspects into the bespoke web design packages on offer.
